Armenians of Baku

The Illustrated London News depicts an Armenian girl in the city of Baku. Armenians were instrumental in the development of oil fields in Baku on the Caspian Sea. The first successful oil well was drilled by Ivan Mirzoev, an ethnic Armenian.

Armenians represented 16.4% of the population of Baku in 1970. Large populations of Armenians existed in modern Nakhichevan, which is a historic seat of Armenian ethnos in the Caucuses.
