Bloody Saimbeyli Site of EcotourismAmidst History of Massacre

The town of Saimbeyli is banking on its rich Armenian history (Armenian castle of Saimbeyli Hacin) and diversity of butterfly species to draw tourism; but still cannot escape its bloody past. Many of the town's residents are descendants of Turks who massacred the town's Armenian population. Hadjin (now Turkified to Saimbeyli) was almost completely Armenian until massacres left the city devoid of its indigenous population.

Missionary Rose Lambert's eyewitness accounts:

Widows and orphans by the hundreds came flocking back to Hadjin and the villages about us, from the plain, bereft of beloved ones, many of whom had been brutally massacred before their eyes. They were penniless, ragged, barefooted, sick, pale and almost beyond recognition, the mothers, wives, sisters and daughters of the three thousand Hadjin men who had been massacred on the plain.
