Archbishop Khorene Nar Bey de Lusignan

Ms. Alice Stone Blackwell writes of Archbishop Khorene Nar Bey de Lusignan, a descendant of one of the last dynasty of Armenian kings. The Archbishop studied at the Mekhitarist School in Venice, but left the Roman Catholic for the Armenian Church. He was elected Patriarch of Constantinople (Istanbul) but declined to serve. A dedicated servant of God, a distinguished poet, author, linguist, and nationalist. He translated the poems of Lamartine into Armenian. He was a delegate to the Berlin Congress of 1878. He died in Constantinople in 1892, rumored poisoned by the Ottoman Turkish government for his nationalism and patriotism to the Armenian cause.
