The Armenian region of Malatya is located in upper Mesopotamia. The Malatya Culture and Tourism Directorate has now requested the return of a rock relief depicting what is thought to be the Hittite King Maradas.  Malatya is an important center for Armenian civilization and history and is the site of millenia of interactions between the Armenians and other civilizations of antiquity. The Armenian population of Malatya was decimated by the Turks during the Armenian Genocide. A directed absence of Armenian history is being rewritten to exclude Armenian history from these areas by 'state-sponsored archaeologists.'
