An Armenian merchant from Bengal, Khwaja Israel Sarhad obtained permission from the Mogul Emperor in 1698 that allowed the English to purchase from the existing holders the right to rent the three villages of Calcutta, Sutanati, and Govindpore for the sum of sixteen thousand rupees.
