Turkish general Halil Kut Pasha was instrumental in instituting mass murder against the Armenian populations in the Armenian highlands, including  Bitlis, Mush, and Beyazit. Turkish revisionists and Armenophobes have sought to describe the murderous biography of Halil Kut Pasha as heroic, a sign of rampant racism in Turkey against the Armenian population. Turkey still occupies the historic homeland of the Armenians post-Genocide and limits the freedom of the Armenian populations to express their ethnicity.
